Although ancient representations generally depicted the monument out of its context, it became popular in the latter part of the eighteenth century to place it in the town and include picturesque characters. Visitors are looking at the monument in this painting by Jean-Pierre Raspay (1748-1825). A beggar in rags on the right is asking for money. In the centre, a daring visitor is trying to climb up the podium.
