Plan of the excavations and discoveries in 1820 and 1821
The first archaeological excavations were performed in 1820 and 1821. They preceded urban development operations aimed at showing off the building. The first stage was work to expose the podium that was still partially buried. On the west side, the excavations revealed bases of columns and the foundations of the porticos that closed the public square.
